The Hustle

This pic popped up in my Instagram feed a few weeks ago from a fellow blogger (follow her @keepingupwiththehaneys) and it immediately resonated with me.

Be Still. Then Hustle. My days usually have a handful of still moments, usually when rocking my sleepy 10 month old, but I'm so used to multitasking CONSTANTLY that I often rush through these moments to get on with my to-do list. It's always there at the back of my mind. Project plans, emails to respond to, phone calls to return, laundry needing folding, and sweet lord when was the last time I actually mopped our floors?!

I need balance. I need a plan. I need to find a way to cherish these fleeting baby moments with Arlo while not completely neglecting the rest of my obligations. I CANNOT believe that this boy will be a year old in less than two months. He's tall for his age and is already starting to look less like a baby and more like a toddler (sniff, sniff) and is preparing to take his first steps any day now.

Life is not going to slow down. All I can do is try to manage my response to the whirlwind of the day-to-day. I will be still in those quiet moments. Sniff my baby's head while he dozes and let him sleep in my arms a few minutes longer before transferring him to his crib. I'll gaze at his eyelashes and perfect little toes with wonder, and I'll photograph the hell out of all of this because I can't help myself (@thosegages on Instagram). Then I'll put him down, sneak away and hustle to get the work of life done. I'll sacrifice sleep and stay up a little later after he goes down at night to make deadlines, catch up on laundry and maybe eventually mop the floors.

I'm eager to hear your tips for time management! How do you keep up with littles, your work, and household?

  1. This quote reminds me of another - Hurry Up and Wait. However, I like this quote better since it's a good reminder to take a deep breath before tackling life's many challenges.

  2. This is my life to a T. It's so hard to find the balance. I try to keep Sundays as 'family day' and do bath time and story books before bed each night for my son, as 'our time'. But there is always a 'to-do list' on my mind! It's hard to stop, slow down and be in the moment.

    1. I'm contemplating a conscious unplugging (I should TM that before Gweneth does!) on Sundays. No email, facebook, Instagram, etc. Should be an interesting experiment in self control!

  3. I could have written this post word for word. Nice to know I'm not alone but ugh! So difficult. Love that quote though, I'm going to keep it in mind when I'm running around like a crazy person.

  4. Completely agree... I have been trying to slow down some and treasure these Moments. Balance is something I am realizing maybe doesn't really exist... In that all areas will never be balanced. Like right now my lil family outweighs cleaning the house to perfection...

    1. Oh I like this! Can we all agree that sometimes we're allowed seasons without balance?

  5. Oh man, I love this post. Sometimes I don't know how to be still. I find myself rushing through the day to day things too. The important things. THE THINGS THAT MAKE LIFE MATTER. I find my endless to do list screaming at me while I'm giving my daughter a bath at night or while she wants me to read stories to her. I've found that what works for me, is making lists, and my planner. I write down every single goal or idea I have down. I even write down everything I need to do, even the small things like washing the dishes. I have a checklist of cleaning tasks that need to be done each day to keep me sane. and I found that having a schedule helps me stay on track and I can actually enjoy time with my kids because I know there will be time to change out the laundry later.

    1. I'm a huge fan of lists and marking things off! I lived by lists when working full time outside the home. It's time to bring the lists back!

  6. Oh gosh - this hits home, especially with this week being Christmas week. It's so important to stop in the moment and enjoy every single thing you can!

  7. No time management tips here, since that's definitely not my best trait. I'd definitely be interested reading anyone else's tips that has a better handle on it though! I agree that as a mom there's a constant struggle between getting stuff done and enjoying the moment. It's really hard not to be thinking ahead and planning for whatever needs to be done. I find myself doing that a lot and missing out on little things.

    1. I think most of us have set the bar so high for ourselves that it's hard to meet the expectations. I'm going to try to set realistic goals and let the fluff fall by the wayside. 😊

  8. I loved this picture, so I used it to inspire others. Love doing that!

I make to do lists. We have a chalkboard area in the kitchen. I have dailys and weeklys. Usually on Sunday's I sit down and plan and organize as much as I can for the week ahead. :)

  9. Oh girl it's so hard! I have a 5 and 3 year old and I'm still trying to find the right balance! But you'll find a good grove. My advice is don't fret if you can't get everything checked off your list in one day, pick back up where you left off yesterday and all will fall into place.

  10. I am a SAHM and Marli will be 2 in a couple months and I STILL struggle with time management. Do what you can. Ask for help. Don't stress over the little things (like dirty dishes or a toys laying around the house). And remind yourself OFTEN that what you do IS enough :) I find that making a weekly schedule helps us plus adding a lot of buffer time in btwn for "emergencies" that come up haha
Communication is definitely key and something we work on each and every day! I would also definitely add never stop dating and never stop trying. Just because you're married doesn't mean you stop working at the relationship. It's important to make your partner feel valued and special so making sure to do those little things that will mean the most to them :) Oh, and I know this sounds terrible, but I started Marli off at a really young age to "help" momma clean so now she helps me put away things (like her toys), load the laundry (or as we'd like to say 'throw it in the wash'), and even wipe down the countertops/tables. Haha! Now if I could just teach her to fold clothes...

  14. Hello, my name is Sara am from England. I would like to say a special thanks to Dr Olokun for saving me, i got cured from HIV disease with his powerful magical healing spell. Friends, I was HIV patient for 15 years, I saw a testimony on how Dr Olokun cured people from HIV, diabetes, hypoglycemia, herpes and other deadly disease, i did not believe that he could cure me from HIV i have spent so much on medicine. I contacted this man and behold i had a completely new beginning and then i realized that nothing ventured is nothing gained. Sad enough deception from the medical doctors who overshadows English medicine to magic healing spells not knowing magic healing spell is more potent, effective and defiles all medical diagnoses. Kindly contact Dr Olokun If you have any problems that requires urgent solution, you have 100% chance to get permanent solution, my personal and family life is a living testimony and thankful that there are still such persons on the face of this earth. His contact Email: drolokun23@gmail.com and he is always able to help you get your heart desire...I will keep on writing and posting testimonies about your good work on the Internet.Thank you sir
